Many sexual harassment survivors have post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, and would benefit from talking to a therapist.

Maybe you are at the library and you think you see your harasser. Or perhaps you are in an elevator with someone who looks like your harasser. You might experience feelings of panic and fear. Your heart might beat very fast, and you might start sweating. You may change the routines of your life, or stay at home more, to avoid feeling like this. PTSD can also be accompanied by sleep disturbances and insomnia, depression, and flashbacks. Flashbacks are when you experience the traumatic moment in your life over and over again. It may feel like the event that occurred in the past is happening in the present and that you can’t escape it.

Depression, anxiety, and the effects of PTSD can also create a cascade of other issues. For example, girls who experience sexual harassment are more likely to participate in self-harm. They may cut themselves, for example, or drink alcohol or do drugs. Girls who experience sexual harassment are also more likely to later develop an eating disorder. Eating disorders, which include anorexia, bulimia, and overeating, allow survivors of sexual harassment to feel some control over their bodies. Oftentimes, these survivors feel like they have no control over their bodies because of what happened to them.
